The Wii U went on sale on November 18, 2012 in the United States Originally, the Wii U came in two different configurations.

     The basic set came only in white. It featured 8GB of storage. It retailed for $299.  During late 2013, Nintendo discontinued this model due to poor sales.

     The deluxe model originally sold for $349 but was lowered to $299 after the basic set was discontinued. The deluxe set features 32GB of storage. Nintendo has released several limited edition Wii U including the New Super Mario Bros. U and Mario Kart 8 set.

     The deluxe set also comes with a charging cradle for the Wii U Game Pad. Both sets are compatible with nearly all accessories from the Wii. The Wii U does not play GameCube games. An external hard drive (up to 2TB) can be hooked up to either set to expand memory.

     Gamers are able to transfer their settings, Wii Shop Channel games and credits, and saved game files to the Wii UThe Wii U will also play nearly all Wii games.  Nintendo has begun to release Wii games on the Virtual Console.  The first game was
Super Mario Galaxy 2.

      Wii U games are mostly in HD.  The Wii U supports resolutions of 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i. The Wii U comes with a HDMI cable to hook up to a Hi-Definition TV.

     The Wii U CPU is an IBM Power-based multi core processor.  Graphics are provided by an AMD Radeon High-Definition GPUThe Wii U can connect to the internet with wireless or with the Wii Lan Adapter.

     With Off-TV play, several games including all Virtual Console games can be played on just the Wii U GamepadThis means you can watch TV and play video games.

  The Wii U allows gamers to purchase Wii U games from the Wii U eShop.  Players are able to purchase Virtual Console games from past systems. Players can download game demos from here also.

     The Wii U GamePad allows users to control their TVs, cable boxes, and DVRs.  Users can look up information on their favorite shows.  They can also check out what is on TV using the program grid. This feature is called Nintendo TVii.

     Wii U is fully compatible with amiibo.  amiibo were released in November 2014 and several Wii U games are compatible with amiiboThese games include Super Smash Bros for Wii U, Mario Kart 8, Mario Party 10, and Hyrule Warriors.

     Nintendo has several video apps such as YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, and Hulu Plus.

     As of October 2015, the Wii U has currently sold 10.73 million units.
