Mario Kart 8 was released between May 29, 2014 to May 31, 2014 across the globe.  The game adds several new features including antigrav.  The retro courses were changed to include this new addition.

     The game features several new characters including all seven Koopalings.  Mario Kart 8 features the largest roster of characters ever.

     Game features include 12-player online competitive play.  Elements first introduced in Mario Kart 7, such as hang gliders and underwater racing make a return along with elements introduced in Mario Kart Wii, such as motorbikes and performing tricks in midair.

     The game features full HD graphics.  The game has 60 per-second frame rate.  Mario Kart TV will let players share their highlight videos to Miiverse.

     Nintendo and Mercedes-Benz have announced that Mario Kart 8 is set to receive downloadable content in the form of a kart body and set of wheels based on the Mercedes-Benz GLA. The content has been confirmed for all regions, with a release during the second half of 2014, and will be available for a free download.  Japan has already received this content.

     This game has been confirmed to include functionality with amiibo, Nintendo's series of NFC enabled figurines.  Nintendo hasn't revealed how this will be featured into the game.

     The game has received favorable reviews from several sources like IGN and GameSpot.  The Official Nintendo Magazine (UK) gave the game a 96%.  Critics praised the graphics, new tracks, antigrav, and item balance.  The majority of complaints resulted in the game being stale and recycled.  The game has sold over 5.43 million copies since it was released.

Add on Content/Downloadable Content

     Nintendo has released additional content for Mario Kart 8 in November 2014 and April 2015.  The packs retailed for $7.99 each or $11.99 for both.  Each pack featured new vehicles, tracks, and racers.  Preordering both packs gave players Yoshi and Shy Guy in eight different colors.
