Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games was released for both the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U. It was released on the Nintendo 3DS first on February 18, 2016 in Japan and on March 18, 2016 in North America. The Wii U version was released in June 2016 worldwide. The games were developed by Sega and published by Nintendo. Arzest helped to develop the Nintendo 3DS version.

The games received average reviews. Critics found the game to be slow-paced and repetitive. As of January 2017, the Nintendo 3DS version has sold 660,000 copies while the Wii U version has sold 420,000 copies.
