The Wii is the fifth gaming console from Nintendo. It was originally code named Revolution. It was released on November 19, 2006 in the U.S. and Canada and on December 2, 2006 in Japan.  Nintendo lowered the price of the Wii to $199 in Summer 2009.

The Wii uses SD media cards to save game data to free up room on Wii's internal memory storage.

Nintendo shut access off to several channels in June 2013.  These included the News Channel, Weather Channel, and Check Mii Out/

Backwards Compatibility

The Wii is compatible with official GameCube discs. A GameCube controller is required to play GameCube games. A GameCube memory card is required to save game information.  New Wii models are not backwards compatible.

Nintendo DS

The Wii supports wireless connectivity with the Nintendo DS. Players can use the DS microphone and touch screen as inputs for Wii games. The first game to do this is Pokemon Battle Revolution.  With the new Nintendo Channel, gamers can download DS game demos right to their DS.

Wii MotionPlus

The Wii MotionPlus accessory for the Wii Remote will allow the controller to have even more precise motion. The accessory will be packaged with Wii Sports Resort.

Additional games are being designed to work with the device. Previous games will not work with the device.

The Wii MotionPlus has an expansion on the bottom to work with the Nunchuk or Classic Controller. A longer Wii Remote Jacket will be packaged with the device to accommodate the device.  New Wii Remotes will have Wii MotionPlus already built in.

Wireless Connectivity

The Wii connects to the internet through wireless routers. It has a built in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi connector. As with the Nintendo DS, Wii isn't compatible with all routers. In these cases, a separate computer USB connection device is available. AOSS support was added in Firmware update 3.0.

Parental Controls

The Wii features parental controls which allows for blocking games or Internet access. Parental controls aren't available for GameCube games.

Channels

Wii features six channels as default. Additional channels can be acquired through the Wii Shop Channel. Users can also browse the internet by purchasing software available from Opera.

Virtual Console

Players can purchase Nintendo, Sega, and Turbografx classic games through the Wii Shop using Wii Points.

Hardware Problems

When it first came out, some Wii consoles had problems during the first firmware update. This update made some Wii consoles unusable. Nintendo offered free repairs or replacements.

Some Wii consoles have also had problems overheating while receiving WiiConnect 24 data in standby mode.

Another issue was with the WiiRemote wrist straps breaking. Players reported broken TVs and injuries due to the straps breaking. Nintendo offered free replacements of the straps.  Nintendo also released free Wii Remote jackets that featured cushions.

Wii U

Gamers who chose to upgrade to the Wii U can transfer save data, Wii Points, and purchased games to their new Wii U.  Some items may not be able to transfer.  An SD memory card of 512MB or greater is required.  Most Wii games and accessories can be used with the Wii U.  The Wii U will not play GameCube games.
