The New Super Mario Bros. is a side-scrolling video game that war released on May 16. 2006.  The game looks similar to Super Mario Bros. 3. 

     The game takes up both screens of the Nintendo DS.  On the world map, Mario is on the top screen with the world's stages and the eight worlds is on the bottom.  While in a stage, Mario is on top and the score, coins, and backup power-up is on the bottom.

     Mario must save Princess Peach from Bowser JR.   The are eight worlds Mario or Luigi must go through to save her.  Worlds 4 and 7 can be reached if Mario is Mini  Mario.  There are 80 levels between the 8 worlds.

     The game features several elements from other Mario games.  The goal at the end of each stage is that of the original Mario game for the NES.  The Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Starman return alongside with new power-ups. The Blue Shell turns Mario into Shell Mario. The Mega Mushroom turns Mario into Mega Mario and destroy everything in his path.  The other one turns Mario into Mini Mario.  Mario then can fit into tight spaces and walk along water.

     Many of the old foes return.  New foes make an appearance to stop Mario in his tracks.  These include

     The game features original music composed by Asuka Ota and Hajime Wakai, under the direction of original Super Mario Bros. composer Koji Kondo.  A new twist in the game music is that some characters perform a dance move in response to certain riffs in the score. For example, Goombas and power-ups hop, Koopa Troopas do the Twist, Cheep-Cheeps perform an inline twist, and Spinies do an about face.

     The main game is for one player.  There are other mini games to play including multi-player.  These can't be played on the Nintendo Wi-Fi.

     The game sold 420,000 units in just one day in Japan and nearly 1 million in just four days.  The game has sold over 29 million copies since March 2013.  Its the second best selling Nintendo DS game.
