The game was released in November 2005 in North America, Australia and Europe.  It was released the following month in Japan.  South Korea got it in April 2007.

     The game has similar game play as other titles in the series.  One of the biggest changes is the ability to play on the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection with players around the world.  Changes were made in Wi-Fi mode such as only four players could race instead of the normal eight.

     Also new to the game is the ability to draw icons that appear as a decal on the car and on the multiplayer screen.

     There are thirteen characters that are playable.  Three of the characters are new to the series.  These were Shy Guy, Dry Bones, and R.O.B.

     The game featured several glitches in the games.  The game also had connection issues with Nintendo Wi-Fl and players were disconnected.

     The game sold 112,000 copies during the first week of its North American release.  As of March 2013, the game has sold nearly 22.5 million copies.
