Puzzle & Dragons Z + Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition was developed by GungHo Online Entertainment.  The game was published by GungHo in Japan and Nintendo in North America and Europe.  The game originally began in Japan as Puzzle & Dragons on mobile devices.  Then a Nintendo 3DS version was released in Japan followed by the Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition.

The games were then bundled together and released in Europe and North America.  The game was released in North America on May 22, 2015 and in Europe on May 8, 2015.

The Super Mario edition version uses different Mario and Luigi leaders to lead a party of six into battles.  Several different enemies are encountered on the way to Bowser's castle.  Upon defeating Bowser the first time, the game increased in difficulty.

The game was updated in December 2015.  This updated added several new Mario and Luigi leaders.  It also featured new Transformations and allies.  New Score Attack challenges were added that included online world rankings.

The game received fairly poor reviews.  Reviewers did say the Super Mario edition was better than the original.  The Japanese Puzzle & Dragons sold 1.5 million copies in Japan while the North American and European version sold 400,000 copies.
