Pokémon Shuffle was Nintendo's first free-to-play game. The game was developed by Genius Sonority and published by The Pokémon Company. The game was released worldwide on February 18, 2015 on the Nintendo 3DS. An Android and iOS version of the game was released in August 2015. The main objective of the game is to match 3 or more Pokémon to clear them off the screen. The player's Pokémon will attack the Pokémon weakening its HP gauge. Upon depleting the gauge, the player may have a chance to capture the opposing Pokémon. The game uses hearts that replenish one every 30 minutes. Players can also purchase additional lives. Coins in the game are used for making a stage easier or using a great ball to double the chance to capture an opposing Pokémon. Gems are used for giving additional time or extra time at the end of the stage. They are the primary form of currency in the game. The game uses Streetpass which sometimes give extra lives for reaching milestones. The game also features challenges in the Special stage area. Players have a chance to win Mega Stones or gems during some challenges. Players also may have a chance to capture a rare Pokémon or battle a Meowth for a chance at coins. Expert Stages give players a time limit to complete a stage against a rare Pokémon. These stages are unlocked as players get a "S" in Main Stages. The game has been heavily criticized due to its use of the heart system as well as the purchasing of gems, coins, and extra lives. The game has been downloaded over 3.5 million times on the Nintendo 3DS.
