New Super Mario
Bros. 2 was the sequel to the DS game. The game was released in Japan
on July 28, 2012. The rest of the world's release date was throughout
August 2012.
It was the first Nintendo-publish game to be
released in physical and digital form. Nintendo also released
downloadable content for the game. These were additional Coin Rush
stages.
The game saw the return of the Super Leaf from Super
Mario Bros. 3. This allowed the player to fly short distances. The
Invincibility Leaf returned from Super Mario Land 3D. This showed up
after a player had died five times.
The plot is for Mario to
rescue Princess Peach from the Koopalings and Bowser. The secondary
plot is for players to collect as many coins as possible. If Spotpass
is enabled, a player's coins are added to the worldwide total on the
Nintendo Network. The current total was over 1 trillion coins had been
collected by players.
In Coin Rush mode, players challenged
themselves to gather as many coins as possible before the timer runs
out. Additional courses are purchased through the Nintendo 3DS e-Shop.
The game received favorable reviews. Many complained about the
lack of being much different then the original title. The game has sold
over 11,000,000 million copies as of January 2017.
