Super Mario Maker for the Nintendo 3DS is a port of the Wii U version.  The game was released on December 2, 2016.

       Some of the Wii U features aren't present in the 3DS version.  The biggest feature is the the ability to search for playable stages.  While most of the stages from the Wii U version will be playable, some design elements will not be available in the 3DS version and those stages from the Wii U will not be playable.  In this version, players can transmit their stages through StreetPass and local wireless.  The other major feature missing is the ability to use amiibo.

       The game received mixed reviews.  Many critics found fault with the game's lacking features from the Wii U version.  As of January 2018, the game has sold over 2.5 million copies.
