Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam was the first game to combine the Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario series into one game.  The game was developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo.  The game was called Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. in Europe and Japan.  The game was released in December 2015 in Europe and Japan while it was released on January 22, 2016 in North America.

The plot of the game is as that while fixing a hole in the wall, Luigi trips and accidentally knocks over a book that contains the world of Paper Mario.  Everything inside the book is spread across the Mushroom Kingdom.  Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario set out to rescue Princess Peach and Paper Princess Peach.  They have to fight against "real" and "Paper" enemies including the two Bowsers.  Paper Mario has the ability to copy himself and each copy can battle during his turn.

The game features a card system that can help during battles.  Mario Bros. amiibo are compatible and are used to create various cards in the game.  Supported amiibo include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Toad, and Bowser.  Empty cards can be purchased at the card shop from a Toad standing nearby.  Regular cards can be purchased from the shop keeper.

The game received mostly positive reviews.  A few reviewers gave it low scores mostly for not being original.  Some complained that it kept the same type of battle system as Paper Mario: Sticker Star.  This game used stickers during battle.  As of January 2018, the game has sold 820,000 copies.
