The Nintendo 64 was Nintendo's third home console.  It was released in June 1996 in Japan and two months later in the United States.

It was Nintendo's last system to use ROM-cartridges.  Nintendo opted for this due to quick loading times, however the cartridges held less information then CDs that other companies were using at the time.  Nintendo developed a disk system called 64DD.  It was only released in Japan and was deemed a failure.  Many game developers decided not to release games for the Nintendo 64.

The system was released alongside Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64.  It retailed for $199.  It's slogan was  "Get N, or get Out!"  It sold nearly 33 million units.
